Dinokeng Big 5 | Lion

The majestic king of the jungle, or in our case, the Bushveld. Being the second largest in the cat family and the largest cat species in Africa, lions are incredibly powerful and by far the most sociable.

Lions scent mark their territories actively and usually only roar at night or early morning when they are most active and also  because noise levels are lower at those times so the sound of their roar will travel further.

A lion’s roars can be heard by all in a 8 km radius!

The males have big, beautiful manes that protect them during fighting. However, the mane also makes it easier to be spotted while hunting. This is one of the reasons why the females are usually the ones who do the hunting.

Here are some quick facts to keep in mind for your next game drive:

Weight – 120 to 250 kilograms

Height – 1 to 1,2 metres

Gestation period – 3 and a half months (1 to 6 cubs)

Age – 10 to 18 years

Lions are the only cats that live in groups called prides.
